Electricity in Cancun is similar to the standards in the U.S. but 3-prong plugs are not widely used! If you have a computer or any type of device with this type of plug it’s a good idea to pack up an adapter. Cancun has Internet Cafés in the city that offer access at cheap rates, most at less than $3 per hour. If you use a hotels Internet facilities, you’ll pay about $3 for only 15 minutes.
Remember that the rules of your country plus about 100,000 more apply to you in Mexico! While it’s important to be safe, the crime rate in Cancun is much lower than the crime rates in smaller towns in the United States but it’s still important to respect the laws, don’t get carried away.
If you want to eat local cuisine, just be careful. Ease into eating the food, pack up some Pepto Bismol just in case and avoid eating foods from street vendors where the food is not protected ... further more if it doesn’t look safe, it’s probably not safe!
Drink lots of water because the climate in Cancun is more than likely much warmer than most are accustomed to, don’t underestimate it or the sun!
Avoid any raw seafood unless it’s offered at an upscale restaurant with a good reputation in the area. Ask about their handling procedures when in doubt or simply avoid it all together.
Don’t eat fruits or veggies that aren’t clean, most of the fruit and veggies in Cancun come from the local area and fertilizer can kill! Read the menu at restaurants to see if the fruits are purified with iodine drops. Remember salsa is a raw too ... avoid it if you don’t know.
The hotels in Cancun all have water-purifying systems but because of the salt and the chemicals ... it’s still recommended to drink bottled water.
Tip the maids, even a few dollars everyday will go a long way. They work hard and aren't paid much. Also, bringing small toys/pens/pencils/etc for their children is always appreciated.
all-exclusive is the way to go, at hotels and clubs. May cost a little extra, but it's so worth it.
Every night there are tons of pizza guys driving around on their scooters. You can easily bargain them down in price for the pizza. Sometimes the pizzas are cold though, so If you want a guaranteed fresh pizza, you should phone in and order it.
