    A TRAGIC LOSS
    To the editor
On Jan. 7 Woburn lost one of its finest. His name is Nolan Webster. He did not die from war, disease or an act of nature. By all indications Nolan left us, from a culmination of events that should have been happy, but instead turned tragic.
If you dont know Nolan, let me tell you a little about him. He was born in Winchester in 1984, and was brought up his entire life in Woburn. He is the son of Maureen (MacLeod) and William Webster or, as most friends and relatives know them "Moe and Weasa".
Nolan is the younger brother and best friend of Ryan. A graduate from Woburn High School in 2002, Nolan went on to attend the University of Massachusetts, Lowell where he recently received his degree in Business Administration. As stars shine bright, so was his future.
To look at most children is to look at a reflection of their environment. Nolan's environment is one that many would envy. A loving and extremely tight-knit family molded the Webster boys into fine young men. They would make any parent proud. As a testament to this wonderful family, all you needed to do was drive by Graham Funeral Home on the evening of Jan. 12.
The line of relatives, friends, co-workers and schoolmates was the most incredible outpouring I have ever seen. People waited for up to four plus hours in the cold to offer their sympathy and condolences. What a statement!
After Nolan graduated college, he and his beautiful soul mate Kristen decided a little vacation was in order. Mexico it would be. Who would know that within 24 hours of their arrival, Nolan would be gone and a family and community would be devastated?
The circumstances of his passing are not clear and may never be. A couple of things are quite clear though. When you leave this country to go on vacation, you are literally putting your life in someone else's hands.
The callous treatment these young people and their family members were shown by staff at the Oasis Cancun should be enough to make all of us outraged. As of today, the Webster Family has still not heard a word from the hotel Oasis Cancun informing them of any details regarding the accident that occurred at their hotel.
Hundreds of reports of murder, rape, beatings and muggings are on the web for all to see. If you're sick, good luck. The treatment and care you would receive across the border does not compare to anything we have here. If you are about to turn eighteen and want to exercise your drinking rights down South, watch it! To some of the locals, you are easy prey with a pocket full of dollars.
I could go on and on about the horror stories, but that's not enough. In memory of Nolan and the Webster family what I am requesting is this, when planning a vacation now or in the future do not consider Mexico as one of your vacation destinations.
My family and friends will not spend a dime of our hard earned money in the country of Mexico, a country where many couldnt care less about the ones we love. I would encourage all others who read this letter to do the same. Let's hit them where it really hurts, the pocket. Nothing can bring this great guy back to us, but we may be able to stop something similar from happening again.

The hall ways were flooded 24/7. The beach had trash everywhere, there was even trash in the pools. Air conditioner did not work and the water temp in the shower went from extremely cold to extremely hot in a matter of seconds. I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.

I stayed here spring break of '06 and it was easily the crazyest week of my life. I highly recommend staying at the Oasis Cancun or Oasis Playa. Grand Oasis is more upscale so most students just stay at the other two, which is definitly where you want to be if excessive drinking is your idea of a good time. The clubs in cancun are legendary and any spring breaker should look into buying the clubbing pass. (Mine was 200 CAD and gave me access to The City(twice), daddy-o, margueritaville, fat tuesdays, basic(sick club), and some boat cruise which i didnt bother going on but later regretted). Oh yeah, never eat the hot dogs from the snack bar.. i had to take a dump like 8 or 9 times after i had one of those and it ruined one precious cancun night(i didnt drink :( )... Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that if you're going on spring break, not sure where to go or if cancun is a good idea, then definitly just go out and do it cuz theres no way you'll regret it.

Our family went to the Oasis Cancun over Christmas, 2006--the rooms were horrible-water in hallways, 24/7, water in each room we looked at..(to move into instead of staying in our room.all hallways were wet, or had puddles...smell bad, the room we were in had no air, my husband waited for 2 hours in the room for a repairman that was promised, but never came...we wasted alot of time waiting, looking at other rooms....& ended up staying in our initial room...mold on the walls!! the pool & beach were beautiful...but beware of flooding in rooms & hallways.

I went at 45 and had an amazing time partying. Just cause your over 40 doesn't mean your dead and don't like to party. Hotel was an absolute blast. And loved the foam party.

I found that after visiting the Oasis in Feb 07, the staff was rude and heartless. I asked them about the death of a 22 year old boy and they said "it happens all the time, don't worry about it." We'll that comment is not going to get me to go back to Mexico. If I have to worry about dying (since it happens "all the time") then I will not be going EVER AGAIN. I strongly encourage others to do the same and find a better more safer and friendly desitination to visit. If you do plan on going to Mexico, PLEASE be care because your chances of dying are MUCH HIGHER than they are in the US or Canada. Your chance of dying by the pool, or drowning, or being murdered is greater than getting killed in a car accident in the US or Canada. Please use your head and be safe!!!

Just got back from the Grand Oasis where we were supposed to have a meeting with the "upper" hotel meeting regarding my son's drowning in their hotel swimming pool at 4PM on 1/7. Well the meeting did take place, NONE of the top management that were supposed to attend the meeting did. At the last minute they decided it was not in their best interest. The one member from the management that did come into the meeting left 1/2 way thru the meeting I think he must have had something more important to do than listen to the details surrounding my son's death at their pool. This place is a total disgrace, their management is heartless and the one memeber I met did not even have the courage to look me in the eyes the entire time it talked to him. Stay away for your own safety. The 2 1/2 days we were there a very similar situation happened at the pool but the boy survived. It is a VERY poorly run hotel, with the problem starting at the TOP!
